About Us

The Kings Arms and Royal Hotel is a coaching inn conveniently located on Godalming High Street with a long history that dates back to 1639 (although it is believed that a building has stood on this site since as far back as the 1300s).

Our pub and dining areas have booths with plug sockets and USB ports for phone charging – ideal for remote working and informal business meetings. Our pub serves traditional British cuisine and hearty breakfasts are also available to set you up for the day – from continental style to full English. Our friendly team serve a wide range of drinks including coffees, real ales and local brews as well as a large selection of premium wines, spirits and an interesting range of soft drinks. We have renovated the public areas tastefully and enhanced the original features and in the winter months, why not relax by our roaring log fire?

We also have a small private room for hire for small drinks parties (or it doubles up as the perfect snug area to relax in over a pint of our finest ale or a glass of something chilled).

We have 20 high quality rooms in a classic, yet contemporary style. Rooms at The Kings all have a TV, private ensuite and tea/coffee making facilities. Many also have their charming original characteristics including wood panelling and fireplaces.

History

There has been a building on our site since the 1300s although the first mention of the Kings itself is not until 1639. The Georgian frontage was added in 1753 although the size of the building was reduced in the 1890s when a decline in trade resulted in part of the front being turned into a shop. It wasn’t until 1936 that the Kings left private ownership and was bought by the Friary Brewery of Guildford which later became part of Allied Breweries.

We’ve had a few famous guests over the years including Tsar Peter the Great (who left without paying his bill!) as well as some European “royalty” who met here in 1814 to discuss post war Europe after the Battle of Trafalgar. Tsar Peter the Great’s visit is commemorated by a plaque on the front of the building which was unveiled in 1998 by the Russian Ambassador to commemorate the tricentenary of the visit.

Functions

Whether for a small family gathering, an intimate drinks party for friends, or an informal business meeting over coffee and pastries, The Kings team will make yours a memorable affair. Our experienced team are ready to work with you and to discuss your individual needs and requirements.

The Csar Bar is a private room located at the front of the building and we also have our raised area in the pub which can be sectioned off (although not providing a fully private space). For the warmer months, our Secret walled Garden is a perfect spot for a party and we can add fairy lights and provide blankets to add to the atmosphere and stave off the chill!

For all areas, we can offer canapes, decadent afternoon tea options or buffets – just come and talk to us and we will do our very best to come up with the perfect solution for your event.

What’s On

The Kings puts on a number of events throughout the week and one-off monthly events such as “meet the brewer”, quizzes and occasional live music.
